August 19, 2014

The University of Minnesota is gearing up for the 2014 Great Minnesota Get-Together, showcasing an impressive 12-day schedule of events and exhibits that highlight the U’s research and outreach.

This year, the U of M will open the doors of its new Driven to Discover Research Building, which includes more than 30 University research groups engaging adults and children in research focused on diverse topics such as bullying, genetics, jury-decision making, heart disease, physical fitness and distracted driving (using simulators). Fairgoers are invited to join in on, and contribute to, the innovative and groundbreaking research the U of M is known for. The Driven to Discover Research Building is located across from the Education Building and is open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. each day of the Fair. A complete list of research projects being hosted this year is available here.

In addition to many experts and attractions in the U building, fairgoers can check out the U’s statewide impact by visiting the 4-H Building. 4-H, a University of Minnesota Extension youth development program, engages K-12 participants from all 87 Minnesota counties. More than 6,000 exhibits and performing arts shows will feature the knowledge and skills 4-H’ers have acquired throughout the year. Approximately 2,200 ‘blue ribbon’ kids will exhibit livestock in the animal barns. Additionally, there are several science activities to try in the 4-H Building. Fairgoers are invited to operate a drone to discover the Science of Agriculture, enjoy a 4-H Arts-In performance, cheer on engineering teams as they build and showcase Rube Goldberg machines, and attend the 4-H Purple Ribbon beef auction. Saturday, August 23rd  is 4-H Day at the Fair.

The U of M building and stage will again feature an array of programming throughout the 12 days of the Fair. Events and exhibits include a presentation from the 2014 American Solar Challenge 2nd place Solar Car Team; music and dance performances by Vocal U and MinnesoTap; interactive laparoscopic surgery training devices presented by the Medical Devices Center; opportunities to interact with Gopher athletes and teams; and demonstrations by many of the U’s colleges and departments. A full U of M building and stage schedule is available here. The U of M Building is open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily.

The University’s College of Food, Agricultural and Natural Resource Sciences (CFANS) will again host events and exhibits every day of the Fair. The college’s display in the Agriculture-Horticulture Building will feature Master Gardener demonstrations; “Garden in a Glove,” where kids can plant seeds in plastic gloves to take home; and a social media photo opportunity where visitors can take a photos using CFANS props including fishing waders and bee keeper’s headgear and share on social media using the hashtag #facesofcfans.

University of Minnesota backpacks will be given away every day of the Fair at the U of M building at noon and 6 p.m. Supplies are limited. Additionally, visitors who participate in U of M trivia at the stage will have the chance to win backpacks, water bottles and sunglasses throughout the Fair.

Maroon and Gold Day is August 31
Visitors are encouraged to proudly wear their maroon and gold attire, stop by the U of M building to show their love for the U in an Instagram photo opportunity and watch the U of M Marching Band in the 2 p.m. State Fair Parade on Maroon & Gold Day.
