University of Minnesota leaders will be available to discuss safety initiatives during Jan. 21 'Coffee and Donuts with the Cops' event

Administration, UMPD and students will convene on first day of spring semester classes

Media note: This will be the only opportunity during Tuesday’s first day of spring semester classes to interview University of Minnesota personnel regarding safety initiatives.

What: New and continuing campus safety initiatives will be outlined in a press release distributed early next Tuesday morning. University leaders will be available to discuss details of these plans during "Coffee and Donuts with the Cops," a traditional spring semester event hosted by UMPD.

Where: Coffman Memorial Union entryway, 300 Washington Ave. SE, Minneapolis

On the first day of spring semester classes, University of Minnesota leaders will hand out free coffee and donuts to students and others during the semi-annual "Coffee and Donuts with the Cops" event. They will also distribute safety cards. During the event, they will be available to discuss safety initiatives on and near the Twin Cities campus.

The event, hosted by the University of Minnesota Police Department in partnership with the Office of Student Affairs, will take place from 7:30 to 9 a.m., Tuesday, Jan. 21, in the main entryway of Coffman Memorial Union, 300 Washington Ave. SE, Minneapolis.

Vice President of University Services Pam Wheelock, Vice Provost for Student Affairs and Dean of Students Danita Brown Young, and University Police Chief Greg Hestness will be among those serving coffee and donuts. Student government leaders from the Minnesota Student Association and the Graduate and Professional Student Assembly will also participate.

"Coffee and Donuts with the Cops" will continue Wednesday, Jan. 22, from 7:30 to 9 a.m. in the West Bank Skyway, 219 19th Ave. S., Minneapolis. A third "Coffee and Donuts" event on the St. Paul campus will be scheduled soon.

The University’s collaborative, multi-pronged approach to safety involves several U offices along with student government, local law enforcement agency partners from the City of Minneapolis and Hennepin County, public officials and nearby neighborhood organizations.
