Brian Bell and Nathan Knutson are working alongside other students in the Engineers Without Borders Program at the University of Minnesota. Currently, they are focused on Haiti's massive garbage problem—plastic bags that are used to carry drinking water are everywhere. The students are developing a portable solar cooker that can melt plastic waste into a liquid that can be poured into molds to make usable items such as footwear, utensils, and sports equipment. The solar cooker requires only the sun for heat and doesn't give off any pollutants. Turns out that Haiti's biggest problem might be its biggest solution.
